This big gold nugget comes from the Fortymile Mining District in remote Eastern Alaska near the Yukon border. Gold was first discovered in the area in the fall of 1886, and miners have been working the gravels of this remote district ever since.
The biggest "town" in this area is named Chicken with a population of 17, although during the summer months miners pour into this remote area to mine for gold during the short summer mining season.
This nugget is a fine example of Fortymile gold. It is smooth and dense and weighs a whopping 43.00 grams or 1.38 troy ounces.
